Zero Stars – Shockingly Unfair and Dishonest Claims Process

Review: If I could give OOBAINSURE zero stars, I would. My recent claim for severe water damage was declined on the most unreasonable grounds imaginable.

A pipe under my kitchen sink came loose, flooding the house for several hours. By the time my son arrived home, there was ankle-deep water. The damage is extensive — every single laminated floorboard has lifted, skirtings have come undone, and cupboards are ruined. We are looking at around 1000 square meters of damage.

At first, I was told to expect service providers to start repairs (flooring and cupboards) the very next day. Then, shockingly, the claim was declined because the pipe was not “concealed inside a wall” — despite being a legitimate water pipe, installed inside a cupboard under the sink. This reasoning is completely absurd.

To make matters worse, the claims assessor who handled this case showed a complete lack of professionalism and experience. The service and process have been nothing short of pathetic, misleading, and dishonest.

OOBAINSURE’s handling of this claim has caused unnecessary stress, financial loss, and a complete breach of trust. I will be sharing photos and videos to back up this review so that other potential customers can see exactly how they treat clients when they need them most.

Avoid OOBAINSURE at all costs.

ooba Insure!

The facts are as follows:

  • On 11 September 2025, a flexi hose pipe beneath my kitchen sink suddenly failed due to water pressure.
  • The incident occurred between 15:00 and 20:15, resulting in uncontrolled water flow for several hours.
  • The damage was extensive, affecting flooring, skirtings, and cupboards throughout the property.
  • The claim relates not to the pipe itself, but to the consequential water damage caused by this unforeseen incident.
It is unreasonable to classify this as a maintenance issue. A sudden and accidental escape of water is precisely the type of unforeseen emergency risk for which household insurance is purchased. As you are well aware, flexi pipes of this nature are present in the vast majority of South African households, and their sudden failure due to water pressure is both unpredictable and unavoidable by a homeowner. In addition, your claims department contacted me telephonically on Saturday, 13 September 2025, advising that service providers would be dispatched to commence repairs. This gave me a reasonable and legitimate expectation that my claim had been accepted, only to be informed thereafter that it was declined. This inconsistency has caused significant distress and undermines confidence in the claims handling process. I therefore request that ooba Insurance urgently:
  1. Reassess this claim in light of the sudden and accidental nature of the water damage; and
  2. Provide a clear written explanation, with reference to the exact policy wording re**** upon in your declinature.
Should this matter remain unresolved, I will have no alternative but to escalate it to the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI) for independent review.
