Ooba insurance refuse to repair roof after damaged by the storm on 7 June 2017

I had no leaks from my roof before the ravaging storm in Cape Town on 7 &8 June 2017. My roof and electricity wires were damaged by my neighbour'so roof sheets that were blown onto my roof. Water started to leak into one of my bedrooms. After I inspected the roof and saw the damage I contacted Ooba with whom my house is insured. They send their assessors out who took about 1 and a half hrs to do measurements of the repairs to be done. They told my wife that they do not foresee any reason that the Ooba won't repair it as my house is insured for R1.5m. According to them the damage is costly. After not hearing from Ooba for 2 weeks as we are in the rainy season and water is leaking onto my ceilings now I contacted them just to to be told I did not maintained my roof and they are only prepared to make a financial settlement of R9300.00 and that I have to repair my roof out of that money. I consulted a carpenter to do the job and he told me no contractor will do the job for less than R30,000. Something is stinking here. My neighbor's roofsheets caused the damages which everyone knows. The assessors accepted it. The damages have nothing to do with maintenance. Why is Ooba not sending me the report of assessors and why are they prepared to settle for R9600.00 only. I did not cause the storm. Is its Ooba's voice I hear here or is it an administrative clerk's voice? I am a very disappointed person to think that I've been with them since I took out my bond

Dear Mr. Mobbs

We believe that the Insurers called you to discuss the repairs of the damages.

The waterproofing as discussed is for your own account and you have agreed to this. A cash settlement was offered to you and you opted for the Insurers to arrange the repairs rather which they did.

We are pleased to hear that the matter has been resolved.

Kind Regards
