OnePlan Pet Insurance - Not worth it

I have been with One Plan Pet Insurance for five years. If I could turn back time, I would never have joined. I would have put the premiums in a savings account instead. I could have had a considerable amount saved for my pets by now. Fast forward five years, and realising that this product is not worth it anymore, I have cancelled my policy. Reflecting on the past five years, I cannot recall a single claim without any issue. Either it is an invoice that doesn't meet their long list of criteria, the app that always gives an error or the cumbersome and disorganised administrative processes. I recall returning to the vet three times to fix the invoice for one claim before they would accept it. Ridiculous. As if I want to **** them out of a measly couple of hundred rands. The cover they provide is simply not enough. At least, not anymore. They cover routine care to a maximum of R750. Annual shots alone are R300 - R400. Perhaps more, depending on the vet and where you stay. Things like dental scaling and polishing also fall under routine care. That requires anaesthesia. Depending on the vet, you are looking at a bill of R500 - R1000 for that alone. Not that it matters. You will have to pay it yourself because the routine care limit will have been reached. Apart from routine care, the so-called "pawsualty" benefit is far below what any reasonable vet charges for the incidents that OnePlan covers under this category. Generally, I have noticed how the premium went up and the benefits decreased over the last five years. One of our dogs required special dietary food for a medical condition. We had to pay for it ourselves because OnePlan removed that benefit the year prior. They also have this unnecessarily complex "admission matrix" for hospital claims that only they know how to interpret. You might feel comfortable that they will cover a claim, only to find out later that they deem it a pawsualty claim. And then, of course, it will exceed the R1300. When my pet is injured, I want to get it the necessary treatment with the assurance that the financial cover I put in place for such events will be available. I don't want to scratch my head trying to figure out some or other matrix to determine whether or not it will be paid. Or be surprised with a rejected claim afterwards. Unfortunately, I don't have that assurance with my current OnePlan policy. Also, five years ago, hospital and accident cover was paid directly to the vet without me having to fork out anything. That is no longer the case. Now you must pay, and then OnePlan will (consider) refunding you. Sorry, no. That defies why I took out the policy in the first place. In all fairness, I haven't had the experience of going through a hospital or accident claim. Our pets are healthy, and we safeguard them as much as is humanely possible. But I'd rather quit while I'm ahead and not have to experience that. Lastly, OnePlan Pet Insurance keeps reminding its customers that it is not a medical aid but insurance. Yet, their current model resembles a medical aid. I mean, talking about "casualty claims", "pet med savings", "hospital claims", etc. Perhaps they should take a step back and figure out their identity.

Good day Jacques,

Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and the circumstances under which your Hellopeter posting has reached as we do take customer feedback seriously to improve our service and process to ensure that we meet our client’s expectations.

Kindly note that the Pet Med Savings benefit may be used towards preventative care claims for your insured pet which includes, dental polishing as well as vaccinations. We are aware that the cover limit will not cover the full cost for your fur-baby, however the pet med savings benefit offers clients the assistance for certain treatments up to the cover limit of R750. Should clients request for more cover, they can choose to add on the Pet Med Booster which offers an additional R750 towards preventative care claims.

The Casualty benefit covers for vet consultations, prescribed medication, pathology, radiology and medically justifiable dentistry, minor procedures and treatments or diagnostic tests that does not require admission as defined herein. All treatment and procedures must meet the protocols as laid down by the South African Veterinarian Association.

The Casualty benefit covers up to the cover limit of R1300 per a Casualty benefit claim and your fur-baby has 4 Casualty Benefit claims per a year. These are a few of the many benefits and cover limits that our Pet Plans have to offer as the Pet Med Savings and Casualty benefit is a day-to-day benefit as the Classic Plan has day-to-day and In-hospital benefits.

Kindly note that the admission matrix is in place to ensure that in-hospital claims are assessed accordingly and to distinguish between a day-to-day and in-hospital claim. There are annual cover limits on all our cover types which are renewed on the anniversary of your policy.

Certain terms and conditions are always applicable, and these are included in all policy documents before and during your experience with us. The terms and conditions of the policy must be adhered to and app**** fairly for all clients. We do have your fur-babies best interests at heart, and we will assist with all we can in line with our terms and conditions. Please note we are governed by the FAIS Act and must apply the TCF policy to ensure all our clients receive fair service and cover.

We encourage all our clients and potential clients to ensure that they; do understand all products available in the market; and perhaps approach their Financial Advisor for a factual comparison of products as hearsay may cause a consumer to make a decision based on inaccurate information.

We once again apologize for any inconvenience caused, we are sad to see you go, but we do hope to have you part of the Oneplan family again.

Kind Regards,
Oneplan
