OnePlan Pet Insurance - Be cautious, stay away

Stay away. I honestly don't recommend anyone with a new animal, young puppy or even elder dogs sign up. The past two months have been an emotional rollercoaster. The policy schedules are set up in such a way that it protects them from having to pay your claim. Full of loopholes and confusing terminology.

They lack a basic understanding of what exactly pre-existing, con*******, or hereditary conditions mean. Our vet is appalled and has suggested we move to another insurer. I have cancelled my policy already.

If you do plan to sign up. Don't listen to the marketing speech, read the fine print very well and understand that there is a 12-month period for most things to even qualify for a claim.

They pay directly into the OneCard and that's super helpful in an emergency but be cautious as your claim might not be approved later on after you have paid for your dog's hospital stay and you will be required to pay it all back. Good luck

Good day Jayson,

Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and the circumstances under which your posting has reached as we do take customer feedback seriously to improve our service and process to ensure that we meet our client’s expectations.

Kindly note that the policy schedule that was sent to the police holder's listed email address within 48 hours of initial sign-up, clearly states the benefits offered as well as the cover limits for each benefit.

The inception date of the Pet Classic plan for your fur-baby was the 1st of November 2022.  The information we received indicates that your fur-baby was diagnosed with, and treated for arthritis. Unfortunately, your fur-baby is still serving the 12-month waiting period for arthritis conditions as stipulated in the policy schedule.

According to our policy schedule under the Oneplan Pet Hospital Admission cover (point 4.2.b) it states that Arthritis will specifically be excluded from cover for all insured cats and dogs for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of inception.

Certain terms and conditions are always applicable, and these are included in all policy documents before and during your experience with us. The terms and conditions of the policy must be adhered to and app**** fairly for all clients, please note that this is by no means a ploy to refuse payment of the claim. We do have your fur-babies best interests at heart, and we will assist with all we can in line with our terms and conditions. Oneplan subscribes to its TCF principles and will take all reasonable steps to ensure fair and equal treatment of all our clients.

We encourage all our clients and potential clients to ensure that they do understand all products available in the market and perhaps approach their Financial Advisor for a factual comparison of products as hearsay may cause a consumer to make a decision based on inaccurate information.

We once again apologize for any inconvenience caused, we are sad to see you go, but we do hope to have you part of the Oneplan family again.

Kind Regards,
Oneplan

Thanks for replying.

Yes, the schedule is sent before, and yes it was read before signing up.

The schedule places all pre-existing, congenial, or hereditary conditions on a 12-month waiting period. That's fair yes. Traditional arthritis does fall under that.

My 9-month-old puppy was diagnosed with septic arthritis. Please note that septic arthritis is simply a joint infection and does not fall under pre-existing, congenial, or hereditary conditions as stipulated by vet. OnePlan does understand this but only because the condition has the word "arthritis" in it, all claims were rejected.

The lack of veterinary understanding does not make Oneplan qualified to offer pet insurance and it's a good way to get out of paying for claims by branching unique conditions under one widely used term.

I am more upset at the fact that Onplan will rather have a 9-month-old dog suffer for a few more months instead of looking at the dog's condition, age, and situation on a more personalised case by case bases especially since you say "We do have your fur-babies best interests at heart".

I am simply disappointed, Oneplan could have really done better.

Good day Jayson,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

You are correct that pre-existing, congenial, or hereditary conditions are excluded for the first 12 months, however, we are one of the very few insurers that will cover these conditions after 12 months of your fur-baby being covered with us.

According to our policy terms and conditions, the conditions listed below will specifically be excluded from cover for all insured cats and dogs for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of inception.

  1. Cancer
  2. Arthritis
  3. Heart disease
  4. Tumors/ masses/ growths
  5. IMHA (Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia), Tuberculosis (TB)
  6. Diabetes
  7. Con*******, hereditary, and pre-existing conditions

Arthritis is one of the conditions that are excluded from the cover for the first 12 months and applies to all clients which means that any type of Arthritis will be only covered after 12 months.

We encourage all our clients and potential clients to ensure that they do understand all products available in the market and perhaps approach their Financial Advisor for a factual comparison of products as hearsay may cause a consumer to make a decision based on inaccurate information.

Certain terms and conditions are always applicable, and these are included in all policy documents before and during your experience with us. The terms and conditions of the policy must be adhered to and app**** fairly for all clients. Please note we are governed by the FAIS Act and must apply the TCF policy to ensure all our clients receive fair service and cover.

Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Kind Regards,
Oneplan
