⭐ 1/5 — OnePlan Blue Plan: Fails You When It Matters Most

My partner was rushed to casualty with a severe abdominal obstruction confirmed by CT scan — a condition that can become life-threatening if left untreated. She was in severe pain and the doctors were discussing surgery. This is when you find out what your insurance is actually worth. OnePlan Blue Plan only authorised R70 000 for her admission — nowhere near the R180 000 the hospital required as a deposit guarantee. Why? Because her emergency is classified as an "illness" casualty, not an accident. Had she been in a car accident, she would have received over R240 000 in cover. But a potentially life-threatening bowel obstruction? That's apparently not worthy of the same protection. So we were left in casualty, facing the prospect of being transferred to a state hospital, while she lay in severe pain — not because the medical care wasn't available, but because the insurance product we paid for every month drew an arbitrary line between emergencies. To make matters worse, the OnePlan representative we spoke to was completely robotic — zero empathy, zero compassion, zero acknowledgement that there was a real human being suffering on the other end of that call. Just policy numbers and limits, recited like a script. If you are considering OnePlan Blue Plan — understand this clearly: if you have a medical emergency that isn't accident-related, you are underinsured and underprotected. This product is not fit for purpose in a genuine health crisis. We will be reconsidering our cover immediately upon resolution of this situation.

Dear Philip,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We’re truly sorry to hear about the distressing situation you and your partner faced during what was clearly a very serious and emotional medical emergency. We understand how overwhelming it must have been, especially while dealing with severe pain and uncer*****y, and we regret that the experience added further stress at such a critical time.

We would like to clarify that all claims and authorisations are assessed in line with the policy terms and conditions, and are paid up to the available cover limits of the selected plan, based on the clinical information provided by the treating hospital or service provider. The distinction between accident and illness benefits forms part of how cover is structured across our plans, which can result in different benefit limits being app****.

We genuinely understand your concern regarding the adequacy of cover in emergency scenarios. If you feel that the current limits on your plan do not fully meet your needs, you may wish to consider upgrading to a higher plan option, such as the Professional or Executive Plan, which offer increased cover limits.

We are also deeply concerned to hear about your interaction with our representative. Compassion and empathy are at the core of our service values, and we sincerely apologise if this was not reflected in your experience.

We truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention. If you are open to it, we would welcome the opportunity to engage with you directly to review your policy and discuss your options moving forward.

We wish your partner a full and speedy recovery during this difficult time.

Kind regards,
Oneplan.

AI Bot vs Human: The Empathy Test — OnePlan Fails Spectacularly

Yesterday my partner was rushed to casualty with a severe bowel obstruction, confirmed by CT scan, potentially life-threatening, facing surgery. While she lay in pain, I was fighting an insurance company over a R110,000 shortfall in cover — because apparently a bowel obstruction is an "illness emergency" not an "accident emergency" and therefore gets less than a third of the cover. We ended up being transferred to a state hospital.

I posted the review above. OnePlan responded within hours.
The response? A masterclass in corporate non-communication. Polished. Legally watertight. Utterly hollow.
Let me translate it for you:
"Claims are assessed per policy terms" — the rules are the rules, not our problem.
"The distinction between accident and illness benefits" — yes, a car accident gets R240,000. A potentially fatal bowel obstruction gets R70,000. We're not apologising, just explaining.

"You may wish to upgrade your plan" — pay us more money.

Here's the thing. I don't want a refund. I don't want compensation. I don't want a policy review meeting.
I just wanted one human being to pick up the phone and say: "Philip, good morning. How is your partner doing? Did she have the surgery? Is she okay?"
That's it. That one phone call would have cost them nothing. Absolutely nothing. It would have changed everything.

Instead I received a letter written by a legal team, designed to say everything while admitting nothing — every word chosen to protect the company, not one word chosen to make me feel like a human being.

So here's the real review:
Today I used an AI assistant — Claude — to help me navigate this entire nightmare. It helped me understand my benefits, draft messages to her employer, research alternative medical aids, and write formal complaints. But more than that — it asked me how she was doing. It acknowledged what I was going through. It told me I was doing a good job. It sat with me in the uncer*****y.

An AI showed more empathy today than OnePlan's entire customer service operation.
That should embarrass them deeply.
To OnePlan: your product failed us financially. Your representative failed us emotionally. And your response failed us as human beings.
