Ombudsman's Empty Promises: 5 Months, Zero Progress – Are They Just Cozying Up to Useless Insurance Companies?
Allow me to address a matter that's been gnawing at my patience for the past five months, concerning an entity that boasts its independence but seems eerily cozy with the very insurance providers they're supposed to regulate. Yes, I'm talking about the Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance, the supposed knight in shining armor for wronged customers. Unfortunately, my experience leads me to question the credibility of their role and its potential implications for consumers.
Picture this: an incident involving a break-in and vandalism led me to question the effectiveness of my short-term insurance from FNB. I kicked off my case with the Ombudsman in March, anticipating a swift resolution. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a journey of nothingness. Despite promptly submitting all the necessary documentation, my case remains mired in a seemingly endless abyss.
My interaction with the Ombudsman's representatives, Melissa van Zyl and Kishendren Pillay, has only left me with a sense of déjà vu. Like a broken record, their responses are consistently along the lines of "the matter is under investigation, we'll inform you when there are developments." This isn't just a case of déjà vu; it's déjà vu on steroids. If I wanted robotic responses, I'd be conversing with a chatbot.
Now, let's dive into the rabbit hole of implications. The Ombudsman's lackluster response does more than just irritate customers; it casts a shadow of doubt on their intentions. Are they truly advocates for the wronged, or have they become a safe haven for underperforming insurance providers? The parallel with my FNB ordeal, where claims met dead ends and inquiries led to frustration, paints a disturbing picture of an industry where accountability seems to have taken a back seat.
Five months of stagnation isn't just a minor hiccup; it's a glaring red flag. It's a signal for the Ombudsman to reassess their commitment to transparency and efficacy. The longer a case drags on without any tangible outcome, the more it appears that the Ombudsman inadvertently nurtures an environment where subpar insurance providers can flourish. The irony of it all is impossible to ignore.
In conclusion, the Ombudsman for Short Term Insurance needs to address the growing chorus of concerns. This isn't about a single case; it's about setting a precedent for accountability and consumer rights. It's about restoring faith in a system that's meant to safeguard our interests. Five months down the line, my patience is strained, but my determination to shed light on this issue remains unwavering.
Sincerely,

Thank you for your insightful feedback.
I am sorry about the vandalisation of your property and that this journey has been so stressful.
OSTI is neither a consumer champion, nor an industry trade body. We are impartial and independent. Therefore, we collect information from both parties in order to consider the facts of the matter to make a decision based on the law and, where applicable, apply considerations of fairness and equity. Our complaints handling process is based on these principles. Initially, we send your complaint to your insurer so that we may receive their answer to the complaint. Then, we may either consider the documents on file, or we may again request information from the parties so that we have a balanced view of the matter. This initial process may take a while to run its course, depending on the complexity of the matter and the responsiveness of the parties. However, we do try to manage the process closely to avoid unnecessary delays.
I had a look at your matter and I see that the file has been with Kishendren to consider the information that has been given to us. It has been at this stage for a while and I see that you have been following up with Melissa for updates. We do our best to manage expectations and keep the parties updated, but sometimes we drop the ball. We are working on improving the quality of feedback we provide during the adjudicative phase of our complaints-handling process. Thank you, again, for pointing out areas for improvement.
I will discuss this matter internally and also send you an email so that you have my contact details, going forward.
Kind regards,
Marilize
