My Biggest Motoring Regret: Buying a Nissan Magnite

I genuinely regret, with everything in me, buying a Nissan Magnite and joining the Nissan family.

I purchased my Nissan Magnite brand new from IC Nissan Clearwater in July 2024, expecting the peace of mind and reliability that should come with a new vehicle. Instead, what I have experienced has been nothing short of a nightmare.

Since purchasing the vehicle, it has been returned to Nissan dealerships six times for various issues. Every time the vehicle is booked in, it spends weeks at the dealership, with very little communication and no clear explanation of the root cause of the problem. The vehicle is returned to me, appears to run normally for a short period, and then another issue arises.

The most concerning incident occurred recently when the vehicle shut down completely while I was driving on a busy road, putting my safety and that of other road users at risk. The vehicle has now been at the dealership for more than two weeks, and I am still waiting for proper answers.

Despite repeatedly requesting a technical report explaining the fault and the repairs required, I have received nothing. I have also requested a courtesy vehicle due to the extended repair period, but this request has similarly gone unanswered. I have since been informed that there is alleged engine damage and a motor fault, yet nobody has been able to explain how a relatively new vehicle could develop such serious issues.

In an effort to resolve the matter, I escalated my concerns directly to Nissan South Africa, providing them with all relevant job cards and a detailed record of the vehicle's repair history. To my disappointment, I was simply advised that the dealership would repair the current fault and that Nissan South Africa would not address the broader pattern of recurring problems I have experienced. The previous five breakdowns and workshop visits appear to be of no concern, despite the obvious ongoing reliability issues.

At this point, my trust in this vehicle has been completely lost. Even if the current fault is repaired, I no longer feel safe or comfortable driving a vehicle that has repeatedly failed and left me stranded. A new vehicle should provide confidence and reliability, not constant anxiety about whether it will make it to its destination.

The Nissan Magnite may look great, but based on my experience, looks are where the positives end. I would strongly caution anyone considering purchasing one.

I have never been more disappointed with a vehicle purchase and customer service received, if I could go back in time, I would make a very different decision.

Reviewer Update
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the excellent customer service I have received from the Customer Service Agent assigned to my case at Nissan South Africa. Uyoyo has been exceptional throughout this process. She has consistently kept me updated, responded to my emails, called me with regular feedback, and most importantly, patiently listened to my frustrations. Her professionalism and commitment to customer service have been greatly appreciated during what has been an extremely stressful experience.
Unfortunately, my experience with the Service Manager has been quite different. It appears that my emails and questions are no longer being responded to, which has only added to my frustration. So he has made the decision to just not respond to me.
After requesting a report explaining the failure of my vehicle, I received the following response from the Service Manager, and I quote:
"Upon inspection, it was found that the cylinder 1 (flywheel side) exhaust valve had broken directly below the valve spring retainer, leaving the valve cotters, retainer, and part of the valve stem intact. This caused the remaining portion of the valve to fall into the cylinder. As a result, the piston, sleeve, spark plug, and cylinder head were severely damaged, rendering the engine beyond economical repair."

While I appreciate receiving this report, it only explains how the engine failed, not why it failed.
My vehicle is just over two years old. I therefore requested a full root cause analysis to determine what caused the exhaust valve to break in the first place. Was the failure caused by a manufacturing defect, a material defect, an assembly issue, or is Nissan classifying it as normal wear and tear? These are critical questions that remain unanswered.
As a customer, I need to understand the underlying cause of the failure so that I can have confidence that the same issue will not occur again in the future. While the current repair is fortunately being covered under warranty, what assurance do I have that the same catastrophic failure will not happen again once the warranty has expired?
I am also deeply concerned about the safety implications. Prior to the engine failure, there were no warning lights on the dashboard, no abnormal engine noises, no overheating, and no indication whatsoever that a major mechanical failure was imminent. The vehicle simply stopped while I was driving. If a critical engine component can fail so suddenly and without warning, I believe it is reasonable to seek clarity regarding the root cause and whether there are any ongoing reliability or safety concerns associated with this vehicle.
To make matters worse, I have now been informed that the replacement engine approved and supp**** by Nissan South Africa has developed an engine knock. As a result, another warranty claim must now be submitted for yet another replacement engine.
Frankly, this raises even more questions than answers.
How was an engine with a knock approved for installation in the first place? Was this genuinely a brand-new engine, as I was led to believe, or was a remanufactured or previously used unit supp****? If it was a new engine, how does a new engine leave the factory or distribution channel with such a serious defect?
At this stage, I am struggling to understand how I am expected to retain any confidence in either the vehicle or the Nissan brand. My original engine suffered a catastrophic failure at just over two years old for reasons that have still not been properly explained. The replacement engine approved by Nissan has now reportedly developed a knock and requires replacement as well. From a customer's perspective, this is extremely concerning and does little to inspire confidence in the quality, reliability, or safety of the product.
I have remained patient throughout this process and have cooperated fully. However, I believe it is entirely reasonable to expect a detailed root cause analysis of the original engine failure, transparency regarding the replacement engine, and clear answers regarding what Nissan intends to do to restore my confidence in the vehicle.
At present, I am left with more questions than answers, and unfortunately, my confidence in both the vehicle and the Nissan brand has been significantly eroded.
