Horrible quality from the factory

My parents bought a brand new Nissan Almera about two and a half years ago. The vehicle has not stopped giving problems since day one. The automatic gearbox had been replaced, engine light keeps coming on intermittently and there are many other continuous issues. The car is back at the dealer every two weeks when they are left without any transport for a couple of days. They get the car back and the next day the issues are back. What can one do. Once the warranty runs out Nissan will simply walk away from the problem?
