36 month contract cancellation sham

I phoned Netstar to cancel my tracker today and was told that I would have to pay the remainder of my 36 month contract, amounting to over...wait for it...R3000!! When I called my insurer, Dotsure Insurance they explained that the onus fell on me to cancel my tracking device, which is non-negotiable if you require cover.

My insurer, Dotsure Insurance, initiated my policy based on a verbal agreement. Yes, the policy document states that I am bound to a 36 month agreement but this was never verbally conveyed to me upon signing up. It was too late once the policy documents had been sent to me as the contract was agreed to verbally beforehand.

I think this is an absolute disgrace and a perfect example of a company taking advantage of the fine print and T's and C's.

I have asked for the proof of my adherence to the terms of my policy (recording, signature etc.) and await feedback.
