Worst service Received from a sister at Union hospital

Good Day,

Please help on the below: (hope you be able to read my email as I am so livid)

My son (who was 9 months then) was admitted at Clinton hospital on the 24/09/2016 at the PICU due to burns caused by hot water. His admitting Dr was Dr Gyebi and his diagnoses was as follows:

-burns invloving 20-29% body surface area

-burns of 2nd degree

-septicaemia

He was transferred to the peads ward on the 06/10/2016 and was discharged from the hospital on the 14/10/2016. Upon his discharged Dr Gyebi advised that on Monday (14/10/2016) and going forward, we will go to Sister Lorraine Lester (wound care specialist) for follow up and dressing. So on the 14/10/2016 we went to Sister Lorraine as advised and she changed the dressing which I wasn’t satisfied all and I feel that she was neglected and acted *********ly when she did the dressing. Let me recap on his journey:

-When my son was at the PICU, they were changing his dressing at the theatre every after 3 days ;

-when he was in the ward, they were still doing it after 3 days but in the ward and in my presence

-since he was in the ward they have done his dressing 3 times and I was present 2 times, which means that I have understanding and knowledge on how they do the dressing.

The reason I feel and think that my sister Lorraine acted negligently and ********* is that

- She didn’t clean(wash) my son’s wounds properly (i.e. she only cleaned(not properly) the area where there was infection) and while they were doing it in the ward they were cleaning both his legs properly;

- She app**** the adaptic (a small piece) on the area where there was infection and not on the whole wound(s)

- She then app**** the bandage lightly (different from the ward) and the Elastoplast which was also different and lightly.

The dressing took about 10 minutes and at the reception they ordered us to pay R350.00 which we did and the receptionist told us that we will get the claim and receipt on the 20/10/2016 when we come back for change of dressing. That night we didn’t sleep at all because my son was in pain, then it was Tuesday: the bubbly child was not playing at all, he was scratching himself and when he did that he was hurting himself because the dressing was so light that you could even see through it. Then after that it was the smell (a bad odour) coming from the wounds which he didn’t have before and also there was blood stains on the elastoplast, and those things were not there before. The night passed and my baby wasn’t eating, playing but crying , so on Wednesday the 19/10/2016 at around 8:00 my mom called me at work to say that baby is not okay and the smell is so bad and suggests that I take the child back to Dr Gyebi. I called dr Gyebi that morning to explain the situation and he advise that I should come to union hosp. casualty and I asked my manager leave and take the child to the hospital. When I got home the child was crying, the bandage had blood stains and the odour was very bad. I then took him to union casualty and Dr instructed that they give him the pain drops and medication and he instructed Paulous to do the dressing and we told the dr that we no longer going back to that sister. Paulos cleaned his wounds thoroughly and dressed him perfectly and after that the baby was back to his old self, playing and eating. After that there was no smell even when he went to his dressing on Friday 21/10/2016 there was no smell. Another thing is that on the 19/10/2016 after they changed his dressing I went to her practice to ask for the claim and to cancel the appointment for the 20/10/2016, and the receptionist said that the claim is not ready as the sister need to put in the ICD10 codes, I did a follow up on Thursday and she promised to send me the claim as soon as the ICD 10codes has been filled. So this morning I called them to ask for the claim and they send it and to my surprise on the claim they stated that the costs and payment amount was R334.90, I then called the receptionist to tell her that I had paid R350.00 and she made a fuss saying that I paid R334.90 and she told me that she will call me back after few minutes which she did and told me that I should come collect the R15.00. I told her that my call is not about the R15.00 or the money but about the ethical conduct and misconduct.

What sister Lorraine did to my child is unacceptable because the way she did the dressing it was like she was doing it to a grown up adult and not a 10 month old infant, no child has to go through that misery and trauma because he has already gone through a lot hence I request that Netcare to look closely to this matter because I don’t know if she wanted to delay my son’s healing or she wanted my son’s to get infections. As a concerned mother I feel that I need the answers because what that sister did is unaccepted and negligent and will take also take this matter further to the SANC.

What breaks my heart is that on Monday I did send an email to netcare customer service, union customer service, manager of the hopsital and send it to online complaints but I haven't receivedany feedback or confirmation.

Your prompt assistance with this regard will be highly appreciated.
