We were a nuisance

This review is specifically addressed to Union Hospital in Alberton, Trauma unit. My step dad passed away in the trauma unit a few days ago. While I entirely understand that the staff see people die on a daily basis, they should perhaps take a step back and realise that every patient is someone's someone. And while for them it is just another bed being occupied by someone who is going to die anyway, it does not change the fact that the family members are traumatised, in shock, and distraught. The absolute nonchalance with which my mother and I were treated was appaling. No reassurance (not for the outcome, a simple update on his condition would have been great), no kindness, and no compassion. No one even offered my mom some water after she had been standing by her husband's bed for over 4 hours. No chair. No blanket. The vending machine also didn't work, and everything else was closed - I couldn't get my mom anything to eat. No coffee. And again, no one actually cared. We were simply a nuisance in their way. A nurse actually shook her head at us while we were praying. Nurses yelling at each other for no good reason. No urgency to do anything, and again, no explanation when they do do something. After he died the nurse called the police whilst standing next to my inconsolable mother, making jokes with them, discussing what happened, with no regard for my mom sitting within earshot. You truly made an awful experience even more awful.
