My mother was admitted to hospital today the 5th of October 2023 for a procedure. We got to the ward and night staff was about to clock out and day staff was going to book my mother in. The night staff by the way was extreamly helpful and polite. When the day staff arrived, from the very start there was issues. The first nurse that did the initial paperwork, I asked her who my mom's nurse was for the day to discuss a few important things with her. After asking the third time she told me she just does the paperwork, she doesn't know. I will write the not answering off to her concentrating on the paperwork. I asked the next nurse that came in and she didnt know who either. I went to the nurse station and not one person knew who would be over my mom.
I told the nurse by the nurse station as well as the paperwork nurse that when my mom is done and I am not there yet, please do not let her go on her own as she will probably get lost in the hospital or worse, the streets. My mom suffers from severe anxiety and has some psychiatric/mental disorders and also suffers from severe dizzy spells. Both acknowledged and the second one even offered to call me if I am not there. I left shortly after that as I had a full schedule.
1. My mom was suppose to get calming meds at 9am. She did not have her normal morning meds as per Doctor. 09:30 she contacted me saying she asked for it but the nurse shrugged it off basically. I went to hospital to see what's happening. When I got there my mom was already visibly shaking and in need of her meds. I went to the nurses station (still not knowing who is over her) and asked the nurse when she will be receiving her meds. The nurse in blue with almost no hair, abviously irritated by me for asking, couldnt even look at me for literally a second to answer me, basically said my mom must wait, she will get to it when she gets to it. There was 2 or 3 other nurses just hanging around doing nothing btw. I made a comment about the wonderful service and went back to my mom. About 25min later she only got her meds. My question here is, when a parient is visibly starting to have anxiety and panic attacks, whynis meds delayed and why the attitude when asking for it?
2. An EEG was very roughly performed on my mom not long after that. Stickers being placed hard on her chest and my moms breast even bumped along the way. Is this how you work with all of your elderly pensioners?
3. After my mom was back in the ward she notified me. I then went back to see her again. Doctor shortly followed with his ward visits. He discharged my mom. And here starts the part that made my blood boil even more than it already has. After discharge I asked the nurses station if they can please remove my moms drip as she needs the bathroom and while she is in there she can get dressed. The nurse I asked then asked a nurse doing nothing to remove the drip and that nurse rep**** sorry she can't. Bluntly infront of me refused. I walked back to my mom and an hour later still nothing or nobody to assist her. My mom has bladder issues and it was getting urgent. I decided that I will personally remove my moms oxygen as it was only the tube but the oxygen was off against the wall. I removed it. I quite loudly made it clear they *********** and I will remove the drip to assist my mother. I got a piece of toilet paper and started removing the drip. Obviously the hear when I said I am removing it as a nurse finally entered and stopped me. I worked in a clinic so I do know how to do it but she obviously didnt know that. Once again with rudeness and no tact she said she will do it and I must go to the pharmacy to collect my moms medicine as its done. She gave me a sticker and walked out. Onceagain not knowing I can understand more than Afrikaans or English she told her colleagues that we expect them to jump when we say jump. Doctor discharged her but they can't help us immediately. I kept quiet at this stage still.
It wasn't about being discharged it was about my mom needing the bathroom. Basic English is obviously not that basic.
I decided to go to the pharmacy and when I got there my moms meds had not even been started. So why did the *********** idiot send me there?
A few minutes later my mom frantically called me. They discharged her. She told them she had to wait for me, but they literally chased her out the ward yelling her she had to leave "now"! The organised her a wheelchair and send her out. I told my mom to ask the porter to bring her to the pharmacy but apparently nurses already told him to come look for me somewhere downstairs or pharmacy.
My mom could barely get out the wheelchair and wanted to faint. How the hell can you allow this to happen at your hospital? Would you have accepted responsibility if my mom got lost? Hurt? Fell? Disappeared? No, you would not!
This is the most unprofessional, pathetic service I have ever witnessed in my life!
I tried calling you but the phone cut twice. I posted a part one of this disgrace on facebook and tagged the hospital, no response. I got a few comments on there including a lawyers number. On my second facebook profile I tagged them also in the story. Even facebook messenger no response.
