Private Hospital Disaster
On Wednesday, 2 May 2018, we took my grandmother to Saint Augustines to admit her as she was unwell. The admission staff made us wait for more than an hour as they waited for their shift to change at 19h00. Mind you, that my 85 year old grandmother was experiencing terrible pain that was numbing her right side and was meant to get admitted to Medical ICU. The mere fact that we were made to wait so the admission staff could relax in their last hour of their shift was putrid. But that was just the beginning. On Thursday, 3 May 2018, I went to visit my grandmother, and received shocking news, she asked to be taken to the toilet and none of the nurses assisted her. And this is ICU, there is supposed to be a ratio of one nurse to patient, so where do the nurses disappear to? When she finally received a bed pan, the nurse did not remove it, drew the curtains around her and waited for their shift change at 19h00. Only when the family went to visit at 19h00, was the bed pan which contained urine, moved. Where is the infection control protocol? What type of service are we paying for at a private hospital? There was no bin beside the bed, there were used cotton swabs, used ECG electrodes that belonged to the previous patient, which was evident because there was hair stuck on it! The floors are blood stained and filthy. This hospital is supposed to provide private care, it is supposed to be cleaned every day. This is just disgusting service and disgusting behaviour from health care professionals. We think that going to a private hospital will mean that we will receive better health care than a government hospital, I, sadly, see no difference.
