Pathetic service at NETCARE Sunwardpark

Sunwardpark NETCARE

I am writing to formally lodge a serious complaint against Sunward Park Netcare Hospital regarding negligence, improper storage of hazardous chemicals, delayed medical response, poor communication, and ongoing failure to manage my care following a chemical ingestion incident that occurred while my daughter was admitted to the paediatric ward.

Incident Details – 26 December 2025

On 26 December 2025 between approximately 17:00 and 20:00, I accidentally ingested liquid from a jug that was later confirmed by the nurse on duty to contain a sterilising bottle chemical. The chemical had been improperly stored in a jug, posing a severe safety risk.

I immediately reported the incident. The nurse on duty appeared unsure of the correct protocol to follow and reassured me that the chemical was “not strong,” without first establishing how much I had ingested, which was extremely concerning.

Upon requesting a supervisor, I was informed that none was on duty and that only a manager was available. Despite the seriousness of chemical ingestion, the manager on duty only responded approximately two hours later.

Delayed and Inappropriate Response

I was advised to consult at casualty using my own medical aid, which I refused, as this incident was clearly caused by hospital negligence. Only after further engagement did the manager contact the hospital manager to authorise my consultation at the emergency department.

At casualty, blood tests were conducted, and I was placed on a drip to flush my system. I was informed that my lungs and kidneys were not affected at that stage and was prescribed medication for nausea. I handed the prescription to paediatric ward staff and was advised it would be handed over to the early shift.

On 27 December 2025 at approximately 11:00, the early shift supervisor checked on me. Although I felt somewhat better, my symptoms were intermittent. My 11-year-old daughter was discharged later that day.

Worsening Symptoms and Continued Neglect

On 28 December 2025, I experienced worsening symptoms, including: • Nausea • Burning sensation from the chest to the stomach • Dry throat • Bloating

I contacted the paediatric ward and was told the message would be passed on to Dunken, the manager on duty. I only received a call from him at 16:00, at which point he stated the message had just been handed over. I was asked to return to the hospital, but I was not in Boksburg at the time and advised him accordingly. No further follow-up was done to check on my condition.

This situation caused significant stress and financial strain, as I had to juggle my own declining health while caring for my unwell daughter.

Return to Hospital and Further Failures

By Tuesday night and Wednesday, I developed severe pain and cramps when eating and returned to the hospital. I requested to see the manager on duty and was assisted by Sister Lynette, who appeared unfami**** with my case. I was again told to use my medical aid, which I refused.

Sister Lynette contacted Mr Gregg, the hospital manager (currently on leave), who advised that I must use my medical aid as casualty is a private institution. I again refused and requested to speak to Mr Gregg directly, which was not allowed.

I was eventually seen by a doctor, explained the full incident and ongoing symptoms, and requested scans to ensure no internal damage. I was placed on a drip to protect my stomach lining. An hour later, the doctor advised that X-rays would not be done due to cost-effectiveness, provided a prescription, and gave me a business card to book with a surgeon for scans—despite specialists being on leave and scans not available.

Medication and Ongoing Confusion

I handed the prescription to Sister Lynette and made it clear I would not pay for medication resulting from hospital negligence. I was told: • The pharmacy was closed • I should return on 1 January 2026 • Backup medication was not available • The case would be handed over to Grace • Mr Gregg’s PA would contact me regarding a surgeon appointment

When I returned to collect medication, staff appeared confused and were unaware of who Grace was. After a 30-minute wait, Grace arrived and seemed unaware of my case until I raised my concerns. I was then told partial medication was suddenly available (contrary to the previous day) and instructed to return again on 2 January 2026 for the rest.

This inconsistent and dismissive handling gives the clear impression of avoidance and lack of accountability.

Conclusion

This entire experience demonstrates: • Gross negligence in chemical storage • Lack of emergency protocol and urgency • Poor communication and follow-up • Attempts to shift financial responsibility to the patient • Emotional distress, health deterioration, and financial impact on my family

My family and I have lost all confidence in Sunward Park Netcare Hospital and will never seek care there again.

I formally request: 1. A full written investigation report 2. An explanation of how this negligence occurred 3. Confirmation that all costs related to this incident will be covered by the hospital

I expect a written response within a reasonable timeframe. This matter will be escalated further.

Yours sincerely, Marvellous Ngobeli
