Netcare Olivedale ***ual Assault Centre
On Saturday 7th January at 1h30 in the morning I brought a family friend to Olivedale Hospital. She had been ***ually assaulted and was in desperate need of help. She was in extreme pain and in a state of shock. I took her to that hospital because Netcare website states that they are a ***ual Assault Centre and from the website I believed that she would be helped. She was not. The Sister on duty refused to help her and told her that she needed to go to the Police station to report the assault before they could do a **** kit and give her the relevant meds needed. This is not what your website states. My friend did not know what had happened and she didn't know if she wanted to go to the police at that stage (which is very normal in these situations). She just needed medical help. The Sister also told us to go to Rosebank police as that is the area in which she was assaulted. When we got to Rosebank SAPS (thinking this is the only way to get help) they wanted to take her to Hillbrow (by herself!) for examination. I refused. We then phoned Netcare Milpark who were fantastic and gave her the assistance she needed. They were shocked as to what Olivedale had done. The refusal to help her exacerbated her trauma as we had to drive around JHB in the middle of the night trying to find help. It was so cruel! Had she received the help which was promised earlier her pain and scars from that night would have be greatly reduced. We were scared and alone!
