Mother forced to sleep with ill child o. the couch
My 3-year-old son is currently admitted at St Anne's Hospital Pietermaritzburg and is very ill and clingy.
He was given a cot/court bed which he refuses to sleep in. At home he sleeps holding my top every night. As his mother I politely requested at around 15:30 on 13 October 2026 for a bigger bed with rails and advised I will sign any indemnity and accept responsibility for any accident.
The ward manager and hospital manager said no I can't have a bigger bed. They said they will type a clause from the Department of Health to show me why. Until now 21:58.I have received no clause, no written response, and no communication or alternative.
I am now forced to sleep with my sick toddler on a couch in the ward. This is unsafe, exhausting, and not family-centred care for a 3-year-old.
I am not asking to break policy, I am asking for a safe alternative with signed indemnity as many hospitals do (low bed with rails / family bed).
I request: 1. Urgent assistance f 2. A suitable bed where I can safely sleep with my ill child 3. Written feedback on the policy they quoted
