Kingsway Netcare Hospital ICU Nightmare

Kingsway ICU Hosptal Nightmare On 24 May 2023 my husband was admitted at the ER Kingsway hospital with a burst vein behind his left eye that had to be drained in theatre the next day. He suffered from Dementia and I made doubly sure that it was recorded on all his admission papers. I Emphasized to staff, over and over, that due to his Dementia, he was unable to answer any questions or to VERBALIZE any discomforts. In the surgical ward the next morning he told staff that he could not breathe. He said this because he was confused didnt know where he was and felt extremely anxious.. He often said this at home if he felt anxious. Instead of calming him down or at least just administer just oxygen, the attending doctor put him on a Ventilator!!!! By the time I got to the hospital he was in Medical ICU on ventilation. The next 6 weeks in ICU was a nightmare for me and a LIVING HELL for him. Due to his struggles, they tied his arms to his bed frame. Most of the time he was in an enduced coma. Some of the nursing staff were accommodating, but on two occations I noticed staff sleeing at the work stations. My husband's hygiene was very badly neglected during the next 6 weeks. His teeth were seldom, if ever, brushed and during this time he was shaved twice. I even bought a baby toothbrush and gave it to the personnel to encourage them to brush his teeth. After his death, the toothbrush was never used. Its vital that patients on Ventilator received very good mouth hygiene. His mouth eventuall looked and smelled terrible. During the next weeks he steadily deteriorated on the Ventilator. Hell for myself and the kids were however on the evening of 2 July when he died. About 5 night staff members were standing in a circle just outside his glass room, laughing and talking in loud voices. Although they knew he just died and family was shocked and heart broken, they showed absolutely NO RESPECT or consideration towards the dead or the heartbroken family.
