Horrible experience from the hands of nurses after a c-section procedure was done on the 16 February 2019.
I was admired to Netcare Akasia hospital on 15th of February for pregnancy induction. I had opted to go for normal delivery with my doctor, but things did not go as planned hence I had an emergency c-section. My baby was delivered successfully by an awesome medical team in the theater. My baby was born on the 16th February at 01:00.
I was then taken to a ward room number 40 at around 2am. At 11am I had my family visiting me and prior to that I had sounded the alarm for the sisters assistance to empty the catheter that was inserted in me. The sister just got in and said they "know when to empty the catheter and will come change it only then". Such an irritating answer I got. Around 1:30 pm I sounded the alarm again for the catheter to be emptied because it wasn't emptied in my previous request, again I told the sister that I need her to prepare me for visitors that were coming in at 3-4pm slot. She came (Sina was the name of the sister)and told me that she's busy with other patients and she will come back to me. My pad got full and messed up my gown and sheets, the catheter as well got full.
With no one coming to my aid to help me, I tried my patience and waited. 14:30 I was tired of waiting and at 3pm I was expecting my second visitors from my family. I sounded the alarm and another sister by the name of Tryphina came in, I told her that I have been asking to be assisted with changing my pad, actually to be cleaned up because I couldn't do anything for myself since I was from the theater. My understanding is that the policy stipulates that in the first 24hrs a person who has done an operation/is from doing a c-section she needs to be changed her pad at 4hrs interval or on demand from the patient. And that such a patient can't bath herself thus needs to be assisted. Nope I wasn't treated as the policy stipulates. Tryphina came in and checked my pad as I had told her that it's been leaking and I can't help myself. She found me covered in blood, my gown messed up, the bedding sheets covered in blood as the linen savers couldn't hold all the blood that was coming out from the time I left the theater. She called Sina to bring new sheets and a new gown for me, they said I should get up from the bed (imagine I was in drips and in pain, I was only about 11 to 12 hours since coming from the theater) . I got up with the help of my husband, I felt embarrassed and humiliated because now for the first time my husband had to see blood coming out of my vigina and I was in pain and helpless, I couldn't lift my legs to get into my disposable panties, let alone wear the pad. One of the sisters said the only way to get well quick is to start doing things for yourself, imagine she's now giving me and my husband the job of cleaning up myself whilst it's their duty as nurses. My husband cleaned me down there using the basin in the room in the presence of the two sisters who were changing my bed sheets and didn't even bother to say my husband to step outside so they can execute their jobs as nurses and clean me up without me getting up and hurting myself. My husband cleaned me and gently took me back to my bed and left to go get our family that was waiting outside to see me after the emergency c-section procedure I had and to see the baby.
I had a horrible experience in the hands of a private hospital. My husband asked me why are we paying a lot if money for such a pathetic service, he almost cried to see me in pain and embarrassment of The Whole situation. Netcare motto states: you in good hands! Mxm I was in the hands of two horrible sisters who don't execute their jobs as prescribed.
I told the ward unit manager, I think her surname is Ngoma, I told Sunnet the reception lady I think and I told the other young woman who was doing reviews of our hospital stay.
I haven't received feedback back on how the sisters will be disciplined, I never received any apology from the sisters. My husband as well deserves an apology, the situation traumatized him till today. What is Netcare saying about such an abusive behavior from the sisters? What about the trauma experience I received from them. I am not fine, something has to be done.
My number is ********** 208, my ID number is ********** 996082 in case you want to get my file at Netcare Akasia hospital.
