Handed over to debt collectors without being informed of debt

I received an email from Shapiro Shaik Defries & Associates requesting payment for a debt that I never received an invoice for or notification about. I paid the amount as I have paid the service provider before but it is extremely unprofessional to just hand someone over to a debt collector without even bothering to contact me. I still don't know what I'm paying for. Very poor service.
