Waving (goodbye) to Nedbank from across the oceans

I expatriated years ago but kept my Nedbank personal account and credit card. For technical reasons, according to Nedbank, it's not possible for me (or them) to link my Nedbank ID with the old internet banking profile as that was originally set up under a business name. As I only have personal bank accounts, the profile is really just a holding account on the system. They have therefore effectively taken away access to my accounts through the imminent disabling of the old Netbank. To cut a long story short, I don’t care about this anymore as neither Nedbank Call Centre nor the branch manager will do anything unless I come into a branch.

I have since been trying to close all of my accounts, having called (at a cost) 10-times for 3-hours total over a period of two-weeks. The credit card finally got closed—see they actually CAN do this! I won’t get into the credit balance that was lost and never got transferred to my personal account, but it should be worth a mention. The personal current account—well now that with a balance of R15 is a PROBLEM to close which they’ve very sorry about. Just come into a branch.

What actually horrifies me now is the ratings of ALL the banks on hellopeter. Years ago, standards were at least at a level where you had a section for “Companies Who Respond.” I was once proud to hold a Nedbank account. I’m flabbergasted at this and can’t believe how South African standards have dropped even further, and how it’s no longer the policy of business to make a customer’s life EASIER. I’m really sorry for everyone living in South Africa for this; I feel good again for having left. This was an extremely difficult thing to do!

So, I will probably get nothing out of this, but was hoping to close my personal account through posting here like in the old days. But I see I’m just a small fish in the sea of dissatisfied citizens who have no control over the chaos going on there. Finally, I'm finding myself forced to just abandon my current account. There will be no consequences for me. It will add to a clogged-up system. I was just trying to inject some order into the system and do what I thought to be the right thing by closing the accounts like a reasonable person would expect to be able to. I guess I’m living in the past.
