Over Charging Interest on a Personal Loan
It is with great sadness, frustration and confusion that I am hoping to get a straight answer from the bank. Nedbank to be exact. The facts are as follows: I app**** for a Personal Loan, August 2014 for R33250.39. Including all the additional charges the loan came to R37000. 5 years ago, and under circumstances I desperately needed it. Upon reviewing my contract, I saw that I agreed to 31.30% fixed interest. Crazy I know, but desperate. Total repayment R86630.40. Retrenchment came, went to a Debt Busters to assist. Later finding out more troubling news of what they did to “help”. Finally ended service with them, paid off all other debt. Contacted Nedbank to settle this account or get somewhere positive at least. Received a statement in May 2017 – Outstanding Debt R65161.74, and this after having paid a total of R23097.69 (which includes interest). I then spoke to countless staff at Nedbank and was told to pay at least R1600 for a minimum of 6 months to build up a better profile. I started this from July 2018 until current, which is a total of R12972.34. I then asked for a statement as the last one I received was in 2018 May. My new balance is R63545.12. This means that after having paid the above my balance got reduced by (R1616.62)!!!!!!! I then got an email saying that a special plan was worked out for me to pay a R20000 down payment, which I did on Friday and then I would have to pay R1879.41 for another 30 months. So in conclusion, I have paid in TOTAL – (23097.69+12972.34+20000=R56070.03) My last total was (63545.12-20000+56382.30=R99927.42) The interest on this account alone is R66370.68 on a Personal Loan of R33250.39. My understanding of Interest might not be up to par, but something is off!!!! If I have paid (out of my pocket R56070.03 and I still owe R56382.30, I would effectively have paid (out of my pocket) R112452.33 for taking out a R33250.39 Personal Loan. I need assistance from someone who can help, close the account, or refer me to the right powers that be.
