Not wanting to cash out when closing account

Today I closed my nedbank cheque account. After deducting all the fees there was R49.92 left in the account. I then asked for it to be given to me in cash.

Nope, they won't do it. They will keep that.

I did not have a card since I've only used internet banking on it for the last year. To get it in cash I need to pay R140 for a new card to get the money out even though I'm standing here with my ID inside their branch.

They gave me the option of transferring it to my Capitec account but would not accept it if I only gave them the bank account number. I need to get a proof of banking first. Runaround I was not willing to entertain since there is no reason why they can't simply give me the cash. Why do they accept cash when you open and account but not when you close it?

R50 is not something I'll keep on fighting for but what if I was a poor guy on the street just wanting to get my R49.92 back? Like so many other South Africans. Nedbank does not care and say there are rules that do not allow them to do that. Of course they cannot quote the law on why when asked.

Can you please tell me which law forbids this?

********* if you ask me.
