Nedbank refuses to provide proof while pursuing a very old debt – shocking treatment of a customer
I am honestly shocked by how Nedbank has treated me during what should have been a simple dispute.
Before COVID I was a responsible payer and always met my obligations. Like many South Africans, the pandemic and serious personal circumstances created financial hardship. I am a single mother and have also been dealing with serious health issues including cancer, yet instead of showing basic fairness or even professionalism, Nedbank has chosen to make this process as difficult as possible.
The dispute relates to an old personal loan account where the last payment was made in April 2022, which Nedbank themselves confirmed in writing.
Since then I have simply asked the bank to provide basic proof for their claim that the debt has not prescribed.
This includes:
• Proof of any alleged acknowledgement of debt • Any signed document where I admitted liability • Any call recording or transcript they claim proves this • Any documentation showing how prescription was legally interrupted
Despite multiple written requests, Nedbank refuses to provide this evidence.
Instead they continue repeating the same statements without producing the documents they claim exist.
What makes this worse is how the situation started. The account actually showed settled/closed on my credit record, which is why I contacted Nedbank in the first place to request a settlement letter.
During that call I was told by a call centre agent that simply asking for a settlement letter had “started prescription again”. That felt more like ************ than customer service.
Since then the bank has continued to duck the request for proof while still insisting the debt is enforceable.
What is even more frustrating is that I had similar historic debts with other institutions such as Direct Axis and Discovery, and those creditors accepted that the debts had prescribed and closed them. Nedbank is the only institution refusing to act reasonably.
This is not about avoiding responsibility. It is about transparency and fairness. If the bank believes the debt is enforceable, then it should be able to provide the evidence requested.
After months of going in circles, I have now had to escalate the matter to regulators simply to try obtain basic documentation about my own account.
Customers should not have to fight this hard just to get straight answers.
Nedbank needs to do better. give me the proof. reply.... useless
