Nedbank does not vet authenticity of debit orders set up against their client's cheque accounts

I was surprised to hear from Nedbank's contact center this week that anyone could set up a debit order against a Nedbank client bank account and Nedbank does not perform any functions in-between to check validity of debit orders set up against thier client's accounts and Nedbank does not require any proof of their client's authorisation from any third party to create these debit orders against thier client's accounts. This is truly a frightening thing. This could mean that some Nedbank client's with large numbers of debit orders going off their accounts could possibly not even know that unautorised additional amounts of money is being dribbled out of their bank accounts. I learned this when I called the contact centre requesting details of an unfami**** debit order that had been newly set up against my own account, Reference number for my query is ********** to which I still have not received any information on the entity who'd set up this debit order. This is scary for me as I was under the false impression that your money is fairly safe in electronic format held in a bank account. I guess I now know the truth.
