Nedbank Didn't Transfer My Call. They Transferred Their Responsibility.

There is a particular kind of frustration that leaves a bitter taste in your mouth long after the conversation has ended.

Not the frustration of hearing "no."

Not even the frustration of waiting.

I'm talking about the frustration of realising that the people you're speaking to have absolutely no idea what they're doing.

On the morning of 10 June 2026, I picked up my phone believing I was doing the responsible thing. I had a query caused by Nedbank and naturally, I assumed Nedbank would know how to resolve it.

What a naïve assumption that turned out to be.

At 09:53, I spoke to Noku from the Customer Care Department. Her solution was simple: transfer me to the Legal Department because according to her, they were the ones who could assist.

Fair enough, I thought. Perhaps I'm finally heading toward someone who knows what they're doing.

At 10:02, I found myself speaking to Rochelle.

Except Rochelle informed me that her department couldn't assist because my account wasn't in arrears.

So why was I transferred there in the first place?

Apparently, that's one of life's great mysteries.

Instead of resolving the issue, I was instructed to email my query to *** and include my ID number and account number in the subject line.

At this point, I wasn't speaking to a bank anymore.

I was participating in a corporate relay race where every consultant's sole objective seemed to be passing the baton to someone else.

Nevertheless, I followed instructions.

At 10:40, I emailed my query.

At 10:41, I received the automated acknowledgement.

For a brief moment, hope appeared.

The kind of hope that whispers, "Perhaps now someone will actually investigate the problem."

Then came the plot twist.

At 10:50, I received an email confirming that query *** had been opened.

One minute later.

Not one day.

Not one hour.

One minute later.

At 10:51, I received another email informing me that query *** had been closed.

Opened.

Closed.

Finished.

Like a drive through complaint service.

No investigation.

No explanation.

No contact.

No resolution.

Just administrative theatre performed at record speed.

That was the moment I realised something.

The issue wasn't my query.

The issue was that nobody at Nedbank appeared willing to take ownership of it.

Every conversation felt like being trapped in a revolving door. Around and around I went, meeting different people, hearing different explanations, yet somehow ending exactly where I started.

The irony is almost impressive.

A bank that can track transactions down to the cent somehow lost track of accountability entirely.

As a customer, I don't expect perfection.

I expect competence.

I expect ownership.

Most importantly, I expect that when a problem is created by Nedbank, someone within Nedbank knows how to fix it.

Instead, I was transferred between departments, directed toward an inbox and then treated to the remarkable spectacle of a complaint being opened and closed within sixty seconds without being attended to.

The result?

Complete disappointment not because a mistake was made but because nobody seemed interested in correcting it.

Nedbank didn't transfer my call.

They transferred their responsibility.
