Nedbank: Debit Order Processed with Minimal Notice – Consumer Left Without Essential Funds

I am a registered Debt Counsellor acting on behalf of my clients, who are currently under debt review with a valid NCT Consent Order in place.

Despite a formal request for a once-off payment holiday (due to essential vehicle repairs affecting the consumers’ ability to work), Nedbank proceeded to:

Issue a debit order notification on a Thursday Deduct R6,163.82 the very next day (Friday, 13 March 2026)

This was done despite ongoing engagement and a pending request for discretion.

The funds that were debited had been specifically set aside to recover the consumers’ vehicle, which is critical for their ability to commute and earn an income. This action has placed them in a position of significant financial hardship.

Key concerns:

Insufficient notice prior to the debit being processed No meaningful engagement despite escalation attempts Inconsistent handling, including a sudden requirement for Power of Attorney after prior engagement had already taken place Possible misalignment with the terms of the Consent Order

While Nedbank has since indicated that a refund request has been logged, the matter has still not been resolved, and the consumers remain prejudiced.

Importantly, the consumers are not avoiding payment — they proactively engaged and remain committed to honouring their obligations.

This situation raises serious concerns around:

Procedural fairness Treatment of consumers under debt review Whether sufficient consideration is given to the spirit of the National Credit Act, which promotes fair and responsible conduct

What is required:

Urgent processing of the refund Clear explanation of the actions taken Proper engagement to prevent further prejudice

At this stage, the lack of urgency and meaningful engagement is deeply concerning.

I trust that Nedbank will treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves and resolve it without further delay.
