knowing when they can afford

HI

i'd like to know when does the affordability really make a difference. I live in this world on purpose, however i am one of the lucky ones, yes, but how do you expalin and prove to the NCR that you can afford it? my story is i started work in2006 had2 store accounts, a credit card and a loan,i was retrenched and even though i had protection plans they never covered me,shortly my mom passed away & i had to look after my grandmother which prevented me from finding another job. my husband is still of the old school who believes the under matress saving, we have our own house(paid up) which was inherited to him by his father, who still pays our monthly rates. I dont buy meat and groceries as they have a family business which caters this and we get our weekly food, groceries and petrol allowance. my husband also has his own fruit&veg which means i save there on as well? after years im finally in a permanent job for a year now, i've tyried applying for a credit card or a store account but gets declined with a clear credit history....when do we get a chance to prove ourselves over again, what is it that you need to prove..geez! NCR is pathetic!
