Duplicate bank account numbers between Nedbank and Mercantile bank cause a loss of R20k
I have been banking with Nedbank for about 20 years, financed my homes, two apartments and basically entrusted them with my entire banking portfolio. I was serviced by a private banker and also use eft extensively without any hiccups as i always verify payments . I made a an eft payment of R20 000 to a Mercantile account for furniture removal and after a few calls realised that they never received the funds. Following up with Nedbank they said the funds went to a nedbank account and that it was withdrawn. At that stage they said it must be ***** as two banks cannot have the same account. The beneficiary showed me proof that theur mercantikle account was valid and I went into the Nebank branch to pay for a second time, using the original Mercantile invoice. The teller did the transaction and when I asked her to verify she was horrified that it went to a nedbank account. Luckiliy the Nedbank teller could reverse this. Despite all of the evidence that the two banks have the same account number and that the deposit defaulted to the nedbank my banker and the ombud says that I have been negligent on my eft. This instead of fixing up this anomaly and protect other customersfrom losing funds due their poorly designed systems. I laid a ******** charge against the person that withdrew my funds and intend to pursue a claim against nedbank. I will be moving my account from Nedbank as I have never in my life expected such callous customer treatment. I am actually nauseous when thinking about how much money Nedbank made from me over this more than 20m year period and then treating me like an illiterate . Randall Carolissen (PhD)
