Bank wants money after 12 years

In 2003 i gave my car a Mazda 323 back to the bank because of financial reasons. Now after 12 years they contact me and want me to repay the car. To my knowledge if something not paid for 7 years it has a birthday and its void. How can they expect me to pay after so many years.
