Bank Charges

I have a cheque account and with no overdraft facility. So I would to believe that if I do not have money in my account I should not be able to transact. What surprise me most is that my account becomes overdrawn and I am charged R90 for each transaction which takes my account to negative. Why does the bank allow me to transact when I do not have money in my account
