After 20 YEARS of loyalty...Goodbye Nedbank

As the old joke goes: Bankers never die. They just lose interest! I would say that may just be the case with the Nedbank Fourways branch manager, Mpho Mbata. Or at least he has lost interest in being courteous and professional towards Nedbank clients. It is thanks to him that sadly I am ending a relationship that I have had with Nedbank for 20 years. Because of Mpho Mbata's extremely rude and unprofessional behavior, I will be closing my account....and yes! The pain of opening another account at another bank will be worth it!

Please indulge me as I start a few months back when I collected my new cheque card. I noticed that the cards were due to expire in just 3 months from when they had been issued. They were not replaced due to my cards being lost...my old cards had expired. Nedbank's card division explained that the reason they were expiring in just three months was because my Amex cards were due to expire then, so they wanted to get all my cards issued together again on the same date. Irritating but any way, nothing I could do. I mean, I truly love going to the bank and standing in lines to collect cards!! Fast forward to now when I get notification that my new card was ready for collection. You can understand my absolute joy when they had my Amex card, but NOT MY CHEQUE CARD that had been issued just 3 months ago and is about to expire! Needing to voice my displeasure at the situation, I asked the teller if I could speak to the manager. She asked me to wait as she went to call him. After 5 minutes she returned and told me that he will see me in his office. *First time in any situation that a manager summoned me to their office and did not come out to see me...but I digress. I went to his office where he was sitting at his desk with another lady who I assumed was a bank employee. Now remember, I was summoned...thus I entered his office and began to explain my situation. He cut me off in mid sentence, and with a blatantly dismissive annoyance stated: "Sorry...wait outside." Do you remember that kind of attitude you experienced when you were called to the headmasters office? Do you remember that scolding? Well...if you do you will understand the kind of attitude I'm talking about. Naturally this got my back up and I questioned him (with some attitude myself admittedly) if this is how he dealt with clients. He asked me if I was more important than the client he was dealing with. I apologised to the lady (who remember I did not know was a client as it was I who was summoned to his office) but let Mr. Mbata know that he could have asked me to wait in a much more professional and courteous manner. I asked him who I could escalate this matter to, and how I could go about closing my account. Here's the kicker! Mr. Mbata was more than willing to point out the waiting area where I could wait for a consultant to help me close my account. He then came out of his office, you would imagine to apologise and seek to make things right...Nope! He furnished me with his business card, and a number scribbled on the back with your call centre's details where I could lay a complaint, which I duly did (Still awaiting the outcome after 3 working days). I've also begun the process of opening an account with FNB so that I would have an account to transfer my funds into. (Nice thing by the way...FNB actually deliver their cards to their clients...Nedbank might want to look into that one.) Unfortunately I did not have the time after all this lot to still wait there.

The sad thing is, I was also planning that day on applying at Nedbank to redraft my will and to serve as my executor. And what else is sad is I was coming through the next day with my 3 kids to open up accounts for them. You know what they say in business..."If you can get them young..." well, Nedbank won't be having my kids as future clients either. Please forgive me for the sarcastic undertone. I am usually quite mild mannered, but I still feel the sting of Mr. Mpho Mbata's churlish conduct
