A cautionary experience with unresolved digital payments
I am sharing this to raise awareness for anyone who depends on electronic payments for essential services.
On 30 January 2025, I made a payment of R5,372.30 to Bosch Car Service and received an SMS confirmation indicating that the transaction was successful. Shortly afterward, Bosch confirmed with their bank, ABSA, that the funds had not cleared on their side. When I contacted my own bank, Nedbank, I was later informed that the transaction was still marked as “pending” in their system.
This placed me in a difficult position where the merchant had not received payment, my funds were inaccessible, and my vehicle was withheld while I faced the possibility of storage charges for a delay caused by an interbank processing issue outside of my control. Despite repeated follow-ups, the resolution timeframe remained uncertain, which led me to escalate the matter to the Ombudsman for Banking Services.
What this experience has highlighted is a serious risk in modern digital banking: a transaction can appear successful to a customer while still failing during settlement between banks, leaving consumers exposed to financial and practical consequences. It also shows how system failures can directly affect people’s mobility, work, and daily responsibilities.
I am not sharing this to attack any institution, but to encourage greater transparency, faster escalation processes, and better protection for customers when payment systems fail. If you rely on digital payments for time-sensitive or high-value transactions, be cautious, keep written records of every interaction, and do not assume that an app or SMS confirmation means funds have fully cleared.
Transparency and accountability in banking systems matter, especially when customers carry the consequences of technical failures.
