Struggling to cancel month-to-month Telkom account

I am extremely disappointed with the way Mweb has handled our cancellation request and continued billing.

The issue began in April when we first contacted Mweb through their online chat support to cancel our Telkom 2TB LTE month-to-month service due to poor and at times an unusable signal in our area.

During that first conversation, the consultant suggested that MTN LTE might provide better coverage. However, before we could continue discussing or agreeing to anything regarding MTN, the chat support session stopped responding. Despite this interruption, we had already clearly requested cancellation of the existing Telkom LTE service.

When the Telkom service was still not cancelled, we contacted Mweb again during May. At that point, we were informed that the cancellation had apparently not proceeded because of the incomplete MTN process. This made no sense to us, as no MTN agreement had been finalised, no RICA process had been completed, and we had already made it clear that we wanted the Telkom service cancelled regardless of whether we continued with MTN or not.

During this second attempt to resolve the issue, I spent approximately 14 hours over two days trying to get assistance through Mweb’s online chat support. Responses were extremely slow, and in many cases there were long periods with no communication at all. On several occasions I finally reached an agent, only to be transferred to the cancellations department where no further assistance ever arrived.

After being unable to resolve the matter through chat support, we sent a formal complaint email to Mweb’s complaints department and received reference number MWB***2 on 13 May. Despite receiving the reference number, nobody contacted us to resolve the matter. We then sent a further follow-up email, but again received no meaningful assistance.

Despite multiple cancellation requests through chat and email, Mweb has continued deducting money from the account. Even more concerning is that the latest deduction was significantly higher than the expected monthly fee of approximately R744, yet no proper explanation or billing breakdown has been provided.

At this point, it is becoming extremely difficult to understand how repeated cancellation requests, formal complaints, and unresolved billing issues can continue for this long without resolution.

The lack of communication, excessive support wait times, repeated transfers without assistance, and continued deductions after multiple cancellation requests have created the impression that customers are being trapped in a billing cycle without proper support or timely assistance.

I understand that administrative issues can happen, but after months of trying to resolve this through the proper channels, confidence in the process has been severely damaged.

At this stage, we have repeatedly requested:

* Immediate cancellation of the Telkom LTE service * Clarification regarding the excessive deductions * Reimbur*****t of disputed charges taken after cancellation requests * Proper written confirmation that the service has been terminated

If this matter is not resolved promptly, we will continue escalating it through our bank, the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud, and the National Consumer Commission under the Consumer Protection Act.

We simply want the cancelled service terminated properly and the disputed billing resolved fairly.

Hi Leon,
We understand how frustrating and concerning this has been, especially after making multiple cancellation requests, following up consistently, and still seeing ongoing charges. Support should be available when you need it, and your cancellation request should have been handled promptly and correctly. This is not the level of service we aim to provide.
We have requested the Cancellations Team to urgently review your account in full, including your original request in April, the follow‑ups in May, and the continued billing. They have been asked to make direct contact with you to confirm the cancellation status, address the disputed charges, and provide the clarity and written confirmation you have been requesting.
If you require any additional assistance, you’re welcome to continue engaging with us via Hello Peter, and we’ll continue to follow through with you.
Kind regards,
Mweb Team

Thank you for your response.

Unfortunately, despite your assurance on 1 June that the Cancellations Team would urgently review the matter, contact me directly, confirm the cancellation, and address the disputed charges, none of that has happened.

Instead, another debit has now been taken from my account.

At this point, the timeline is very clear:

  • Cancellation requested in April.
  • Multiple follow-up requests during May.
  • Formal complaint submitted and acknowledged with a reference number.
  • Public commitment on HelloPeter that the matter would be urgently resolved.
  • Yet another deduction has now been processed.

I have made every reasonable effort to resolve this directly with Mweb over several months. I have spent many hours on chat support, sent multiple emails, and followed every process requested of me.

I am now requesting immediate written confirmation that the service has been cancelled, a refund of all disputed charges taken after my original cancellation request, and a full explanation of why billing has continued despite repeated cancellation requests.

Should this still not be resolved without further delay, I will continue with formal disputes through my bank and escalate the matter to the relevant consumer protection bodies.

I would appreciate this matter being resolved now rather than requiring further escalation.

Hi Leon,
Thank you for your response, and we understand the frustration behind this, especially given the repeated cancellation requests since April, the follow-ups throughout May, and the continued debits despite your previous engagement and assurances.
We want to assure you that your matter has now been logged with our Retentions Team for urgent attention. They will be reviewing the full history of your cancellation request, the billing activity, and all prior correspondence to ensure the correct outcome is reached.
The Retentions Team will specifically:
  •  Review the original cancellation request and timeline from April
  •  Investigate why billing continued after the cancellation was raised
  •  Validate the disputed debits on the account
  •  Confirm the correct cancellation status and effective date
  •  Provide clarity on any refund eligibility where applicable
We also acknowledge the concern around not receiving the expected follow-up after the previous commitment on 1 June. We understand how this lack of resolution has contributed to frustration and uncer*****y, especially after multiple attempts to resolve this through standard support channels.
At this stage, the Retentions Team will take ownership of the matter and work through it as a priority case to ensure it is properly concluded.
Kind regards,
 The Mweb Team

Thank you for your response.

At this stage, I do not believe a telephone discussion is necessary.

The facts have already been provided repeatedly through your online chat support, your complaints department, and now twice on HelloPeter. There is nothing further that needs to be explained.

I am therefore requesting that Mweb proceed with the following without requiring another phone call:

  • Cancel the Telkom LTE service with immediate effect.
  • Confirm the effective cancellation date in writing.
  • Investigate and reverse any debits taken after my original cancellation request in April where appropriate.
  • Provide a final written response explaining the outcome of your investigation.

My preference is to have this matter concluded in writing so that there is a clear record of the resolution.
If further information is genuinely required, please submit your questions by email and I will gladly respond. However, I do not wish to discuss this matter telephonically after several months of unsuccessful attempts to resolve it.

I trust that the Retentions Team will now bring this matter to a conclusion without any further delays.

Hi Leon,
Thank you for your response and for clearly outlining how you would like this matter handled. After everything you’ve been through, it’s completely understandable that you want this finalised properly and in writing, without having to repeat the same conversations again.
Confirmation has been received that you have been contacted by the Retentions Team, and they are now taking ownership of your case to bring your cancellation to a close. They will be working through the points you’ve raised, including confirmation of cancellation, billing review, and any applicable reversals.
This is not the kind of prolonged back and forth we want any client to experience, especially when you’ve already made multiple attempts to resolve the issue. Your feedback has been shared with the Service Quality Team to review how this was handled, particularly around follow-ups and ensuring matters are concluded without unnecessary delays.
Should you require any further assistance, please feel free to reach out.
Kind regards,
Mweb Team
