Ripping loyal customers off for years

For more than 5 years, I have had a 4Mbps Uncapped ADSL connection, with the ADSL line managed by Telkom, and MWEB as my ISP. In total, I have been paying MWEB and Telkom in the region of R1200 per month consistently over that period.

But this information is no doubt well known by many of you. I unfortunately have been one of those customers that just sees the same monthly debit order come off my account from MWEB, which has consistently for 5+ years remained the same (R539/month) and frankly, to my detriment, I never questioned whether what I was paying was fair, reasonable and current market related. I have however on occasion seen various promotional campaigns by MWEB advertising new offerings and I always assumed that MWEB was a professional, responsible and ethical organisation, and if the cost of broadband came down, MWEB would automatically pass those cost reductions onto existing customers. I realise now how wrong I was in thinking that.

Ever since 2010, when MWEB initially launched the first uncapped ADSL offerings in South Africa (https://www.mweb.co.za/aboutus/Portals/25/PressReleases/2010/Launch%20Release.pdf), the price for their 4Mbps uncapped data package has NEVER changed. In fact their initial sales pitch was that users signing up for these uncapped packages would never "EVER" be throttled. This was not true, because they subsequently changed their Acceptable Usage Policy on their website, and even though some aggrieved customers took them to court on this, MWEB won the case.

After contacting MWEB support and billing departments about my particular grievances, I quickly realised MWEB had no intent of addressing the issues I raised and it became very evident based on their correspondence back to me that they would never admin liability or concede that anything they were still was in any way *********, and the way the choose to justify every grievance I raised was to state that because I am still paying exactly the same amount I was 5 years ago, and they accordingly are still providing exactly the same services so I have no case to argue. The fact that the cost of broadband in South Africa has dramatically come down in the past 5 years is immaterial to them - the onus is on the customer to periodically go and look at their website and see whether there are new packages on offer that may be of better value for them.

MWEB all I can say to you is that from a legal perspective, there may well be nothing I can do or hold you accountable for, however I can and am sharing my experiences with everyone of your potential new as well as your existing customers. I hope that by sharing my experience, others will learn and take their business elsewhere!

I have further detailed my own experience with MWEB on one of the forums on the MyBroadband website. Customers who choose to read this can decide for themselves.

https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/555327-MWEB-Abuse-Notices-Complaint?p= ********** 2#post ********** 2
