MWEB + Cell-C LTE (LTE = Laughable, Traumatic, Embrassing)
Upon persuing their (MWEB's) website, I discovered that the Cell-C LTE product offered came with claims of speeds up to 30 MBps (in "ideal" conditions). Knowing that ISPs and cellular service providers almost always exaggerate such figures, I decided that even a realistic half or a third (10MBps) would suffice for my needs, taking into consideration that I do not live directly under a Cell-C base transmitter ("ideal conditions"). I signed up for the offer, and upon receiving the Huawei B315 LTE router and Cell-C sim card - I setup and configured the connection and ran speed tests (using Speedtest.net) over the course of 2 days. The results were a combination of erratic, shocking and unexplainable. The ping and jitter was ridiculous, download speeds were fluctating constantly between 0-3MBps (although upload speeds were in excess of 3x the download speed?), I could not even download a 630KB (file size) Excel attachment from e-mail without having to wait a few minutes. Video streaming is insane - you have to spend 3 hours to buffer a 1,5hour video! The 4MBps ADSL line I had from Afrihost far out-performed this LTE product. I then did some research and activated the roaming feature..it helped a bit as now the speed increased to between 2 and 4MBps - it was also a bit more stable for a few days...then it suddenly reverted to its erratic behaviour - so that didn't help either. Forget LTE - it has issues even stabilizing on a 3G signal. The last few days - it picks up a signal (blue=3G and 3 signal bars) and immediately drops saying "No connection". I replaced the Cell-C sim with my Vodacom LTE sim and guess what..14Mbps download speed at the least. Conclusive results to indicate that Cell-C is a pathetic network which will probably never offer "true LTE". As far as I am concerned this amounts to false advertising and can be legally contested under the CPA and probably otherwise. Oh yes- and please don't ask your technicians to call me...I am an I.T specialist for 15 years +, so I know how to configure the router and use the interface - I also know about the positioning of the device and interference...so those weak diagnostic "excuses" will not work with me.
Please cancel my account and charge me pro-rata for actual use. You can have your router back but if you dare think I will pay a cent towards the R1629 (where do you guys buy your stuff from anyways?? Its around R1,000 new in most places) cost of the router - then let me know...I'm not scared to take you to court.
