Why am I being fined for a box??????

I went to the store to cancel my month to month contract with MTN. I had the router, adapter and all, however they said I needed the original box and manual or I would be charged. Charged for what exactly? A box that got wet from a ceiling leak and obviously couldn’t keep. A box that they probably paid less than R20 to get. It’s absolutely pathetic…
