WHAT A DISGRACE WITH MTN
On 1 March 2026, I purchased a 16GB data bundle valid for seven (7) days for the sum of R100 from MTN. On 2 March 2026 at approximately 14:40, the data service was unavailable despite the bundle being within its validity period. Upon contacting MTN Customer Care: The first consultant advised that the data would be restored within two (2) hours. After no restoration occurred, I contacted MTN again and was informed that resolution would take between two (2) and seven (7) days. On further enquiry, I was informed that the data bundle had allegedly expired. The purported expiry of a seven-day bundle within one day constitutes a prima facie breach of contract and/or unfair commercial conduct, as consideration (R100) was duly paid for a defined service period. In law: MTN is contractually obliged to provide the full 7-day service as purchased. Any premature expiry resulting from a system fault remains the responsibility of the service provider. The consumer cannot be prejudiced due to internal technical errors. Should it be established that the fault lies with MTN, the appropriate legal remedy would include: Immediate reinstatement of the full 16GB bundle for the remaining contractual period; or A full refund; and Compensation for loss of use where applicable. The failure to provide paid services, particularly where it prejudices academic access and essential connectivity, may constitute a violation of consumer protection principles, including good faith and fair dealing. I hereby demand urgent rectification of the matter.
