Waterproof phone not covered under warranty

I took out a phone with Nimisa Reddy this January through MTN Direct. The key selling feature of the Xperia is that they are waterproof. My Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is marketed as being waterproof on the Sony Website. Have a look at this link: [URL Removed] It clearly shows a Z3C being used under water. I contacted Nimisa and she said today that the phone is not going to be repaired under the warranty due to them not covering water damage.

I am not sure how this can be the main selling point and yet they don't cover this under the warranty. Please explain??

I demand that my phone be replaced and that it be made clear in future to further customers that the warranty does not cover the features of the phone.

Hello iangvannie,

Thank you for your post.

MTN SP After Sales is accredited to assess and perform cellular repairs under strict manufacturer guidelines and as such, specific criteria is app**** when assessing devices to validate warranty. This is done in accordance with procedures laid down by each manufacturer.

The handset does not necessarily have to be splashed, soaked or immersed in liquid to be deemed liquid damaged. Excessive humidity and slight moisture can just be as damaging to the circuit tracks on the board.

Traces of liquids being detected on handsets therefore voids Warranty and renders handset BER (Beyond Economical Repairs) due to the complexities and costs to repair.

We regret to advise that should the handset be found to be liquid damaged, it cannot be fixed under warrantee. However you are still welcome to request second opinion by having the handset rebooked.

Rest assured, it is not our intention to displease you. We look forward to improving on the service delivery to you.

Best regards
Mantoa
