Useless service from mtn outlets

I am writing this review on behalf of my father (Pierre Marais)

This review is not meant as critique on MTN's general competency as a cellular service provider. Rather, I wish to share the pathetic level of service I've experienced at two MTN stores lateley.

On 30 December I went to the MTN shop at Wonderboom Junction(Pretoria) to upgrade my data contract, and get a new tablet (I wanted a specific Samsung tablet with a stylus), after waiting in the queue for an hour, I was informed that there was no stock.

I then went to the MTN shop at Jacaranda Centre (Pretoria)

I was 'assisted' by Nicko Theunissen. Nicko also told me that there was no stock available, He said that he would order the Tablet on the following Tuesday and that the Tablet should be available the friday after that (6 Jan).

Nicko said that he would contact to me to let me know when the Tablet has arrived.

Nicko never contacted me.

I went back on friday (6 Jan). Nicko informed me that the Tablet had not yet arrived, and assured me that it WILL be available on Monday. I impressed upon him that I wanted the upgrade done urgently, as I would be out of town the following week. Nicko assured me that it would not be a problem, and commited to call me and update me on the status of the delivery.

By Thursday (19Jan) I had still not received feedback from Nicko. I went back to the store to enquire about the tablet. (Again same excuse)

On the same day my wife visited the MTN store at Wonderboom Junction to enquire whether they might have received stock of the specific tablet. They informed her that they did not have any stock available.

At this point I had given up on trying to order a tablet via the MTN store in Jacaranda Centre en decided to try ordering one via the store in Wonderboom Junction. I went to Wonderboom Junction on 20 Jan (the day after they informed my wife that they had NO stock of the tablet). I was helped by a gentleman called 'Abel' (I, unfortunately, did not get his last name). I asked Abel to order a tablet for me. Abel then went to the back to check if they had stock available, and (lo and behold) found that there was actually a unit in stock.

To summarize:

1. At both stores, employees are happy to summarily declare that a specific unit is out of stock (as if they have the entire inventory memorized by heart). Why is this? My perception was that the employees simply did not want to go through the effort of making a sale. Maybe they weren't feeling very productive over the holiday, maybe they were trying to reduce the queue of waiting customers by dismissing ones that would take time to handle, I don't know.

2. Nicko Theunissen, repeatedly promised to call me an never followed through. He also "checked the system" to confirm that he couldn't get one from another branch. I suspect he never ordered the tablet at all. I don't know if he is lazy, a **** or incompotent. I just know that, his level of service is unlikely to inspire consumer loyalty.

3. Mr Abel (again appologies for not getting this gentleman's last name). This gentleman in my opinion deserves special mention here (not because he did something miraculous) simply because he was willing to assist me, and go to the effort of checking the store room. My gratitude goes to this man for helping me.

I highly recommend that MTN get a handle on what is going on with their public interface. If I am met with this sort of service while renewing my other contracts, I will take my business to another service provider.

Follow up (EXCELLENT service from MTN in general, and the regional manager team in particular)

Yesterday (17/2/13) MTN commited to escalating my complaint to the appropiate Regional Management, for further investigation.

This morning (17/2/14) I received a call from the regional manager. He Informed me that they are addressing the matter, and wanted to hear my version of events (I referred hom to my father, on who's behalf the complaint was lodged)

I just want to re-iterate that the initial complaint was not directed to MTN as a whole.

Thank you to MTN for their willingness to address the issue so promtly.

Thank you to the Regional Manager of the store for following up on the issue.

5/5 for the manner in which this was handled.
