URGENT: Outstanding Refund - Wayne Powell
To: Mishack and the MTN/Italk Team
I’m struggling to understand which part of my previous email was unclear. Was it the demand for a refund, or the deadline of "end of business today"?
Unsurprisingly, the day has passed, and I am still waiting for the R404.00 you were so eager to snatch from my account. It’s fascinating how your "rushed" sales process slows down to a glacial crawl the moment you actually have to return money for a mess you created.
I’m not interested in hearing about your internal "processing times" or being subjected to another marathon session of verbal diarrhea from the Italk team. My money was taken instantly; I expect it returned with the same level of enthusiasm.
What is the status of my refund, and why is it taking your team longer to process a simple reversal than it did to ignore a blatant security red flag?
I’m done being patient. Respond with proof of payment immediately.

Since my previous email, there has been a deafening silence from your end. Not a single person has had the professional decency—or perhaps the basic competence—to contact me with a definitive time for when my payment will be settled.
It is frankly embarrassing that a multi-billion rand entity like MTN, along with your partners at Italk, is currently being held hostage by the monumental task of reversing a mere R404.00. Are the "record profits" we hear about in the media built entirely on the back of pocketing small amounts from customers and then hiding when called out?
This is absolute horse****. Your "sales enthusiasm" was instantaneous; your "refund integrity" is non-existent.
If I do not have a resolution and a valid proof of payment in my inbox by the end of today, I will be escalating this matter to the next level. I have neither the time nor the inclination to continue teaching your team the basics of account reversals and customer service.
Provide the proof of payment now. I’m done asking.

Who exactly do you people think you are? It is a fascinating business model you’ve developed: snatching money from South Africans with lightning speed and then retreating into a ***ardly silence the moment you’re asked to return what isn't yours. Let’s be clear—if I hadn't flagged this, you would have happily kept my money, wouldn't you? That isn't "processing," it’s daylight *******.
I am not some keyboard warrior with nothing better to do, but I am a businessman who knows exactly how a balance sheet works. It seems your team is incapable of functioning without adult supervision, so perhaps I should simplify your reporting line.
If I don't have proof of payment within the hour, my next correspondence will be directed straight to your CEO’s office or your Group CFO, Tsholofelo Molefi. I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to learn that their "prestigious" brand is currently being dragged through the mud because their staff is having a collective meltdown over a R404.00 reversal.
Is this small amount really the hill you want your professional reputations to die on?
Tick tock. I expect that proof of payment immediately.

Subject: FORMAL COMPLAINT: Gross Administrative Incompetence and Ethical Failures
To: Ralph Mupita, Group President and CEO
CC: Tsholofelo Molefi, Group CFO
Dear Mr. Mupita,
It is an indictment of MTN’s current operational standards that a matter as trivial as a R404.00 refund requires the attention of the Group CEO. However, after being subjected to a "sales process" that resembles a smash-and-grab and a refund process that has devolved into a glacial silence, it is clear that your front-line teams and partners at Italk are either unwilling or fundamentally incapable of performing basic accounting reversals.
The facts are as follows: MTN/Italk "rushed" a transaction through my account, ignoring blatant security red flags in the process. When the error was identified, I demanded a reversal. Since then, I have been met with a level of administrative lethargy that borders on the farcical.
While MTN reports billions in revenue, your organization appears to be struggling with the logistics of returning a few hundred Rand. This is not merely a breakdown in customer service; it is a question of institutional integrity. Had I not been persistent, it is evident that MTN would have been perfectly content to retain funds that do not belong to it.
I am a businessman, and I value my time. I do not have the inclination to act as an unpaid auditor for your billing department or to continue engaging with staff who treat "end of business" deadlines as optional suggestions.
I expect you to direct the appropriate person to produce a valid proof of payment today. I have no interest in hearing about "internal protocols" or "processing windows"—I expect the same "enthusiasm" in returning my funds that your team displayed when they took them.
I trust this will be the final time I am forced to bring such a microscopic operational failure to your desk.
Regards,
Wayne Powell
