Unsolicited Contact in Breach of POPIA
I am so sick and tired of the constant and incessant attempts at marketing goods and services to me via your third party leeches.
I am a MTN contract customer and after the umpteenth unsolicited call from Mondo Mobile or whichever call centre lackey it was, I submitted a request on the 29th of July 2022 to MTN via the contact form on their website revoking my consent to direct marketing in terms of Section 11(3)(b) of POPIA. This submission was never acknowledged, nor attended to apparently.
Fast forward to today,11 August 2022, I receive a call from some upstart on ***. I tell her I do not want to be contacted and she slams the phone down on me.
All I need to do is call MTN and revoke my consent verbally right? Wrong! I call 135 and speak to an agent by the name of Nosipho. I tell her that I want to revoke my consent to being contacted by MTNs third party agents and by MTN for the purposes of direct marketing. What does she go on to tell me? That I cannot do this because I consented to sharing my contact details with MTNs third party agents when I signed up for my contract. Whilst in the middle of letting Nosipho know that she is wholly incorrect and that her refusal to do so is ******** she drops the call on me.
Please leave me alone MTN. Ensure that every piece of information relating to me is scoured from your agent's databases and not contact me than otherwise strictly necessary for the purpose of my existing and current contract. My next complaint will be to the Information Regulator and ICASA.
