************ Business Practice by MTN
I cancelled my MTN contract after the 24 month term of the contract had ended in August 2017 at the MTN La Lucia, Durban branch with the consultant I always dealt with. I requested to go on Pay As You Go as my daughter was going oversees for 2 years and as I had taken out this contract for her and I no longer required the contract. The consultant assured me that the contract had been cancelled and as far as I was concerned the contract was cancelled as no further debit orders were debited against my account for this contract, However on the 1st of June 2019, I noticed that MTN debited my bank account for an additional amount of R670.00 over and above my current contract amount of R665.00. When querying this with MTN, their accounts department advised that this was for 2 months dating back to 2017 as these amounts had not been paid for September and October 2017, and stated to me that the contract was not cancelled but changed to a month to month contract according to their records.. I have been advised that MTN has created a new department to review previous cancelled contracts and I find it incredulous that MTN can just debit ones bank account without advising the client or communicating with the client beforehand. This is paramount to theft and ************ business practice on the part of MTN and you then have to deal with the fustrating call centre in trying to get a refund from MTN which takes endless phone calls and reference numbers with no resolution forthcoming. I feel ****** by MTN as I clearly followed their procedure and duly cancelled the contract in 2017 once the 24 month contract term had ended. MTN debits my bank account every month so I cannot understand how they can now claim in 2019 that I had not paid for 2 months in 2017 when I still have my current contract with them.. This is absolutely untrue as the same MTN consultant again confirmed with me on the 2nd June 2019 that he had indeed cancelled the contract in 2017. Consumers need to be aware of this ************ business practice that MTN is employing by ********ly debiting their customers accounts. No one in the Call Centre could assist in resolving my query and I have now been issued with 3 reference numbers. I feel let down by MTN as a loyal customer of theirs in good standing for over 6 years and I will be laying a complaint with the FAIS Ombudsman and opening a case of theft against them if this is not resolved to my satisfaction.
