********* out of bundle billing

During December I attempted to purchase a data bundle but was dealing with numerous issues and did not realise that the transaction had not gone through. Over the course of that afternoon and the next two days I proceeded to use out of bundle data and incurred a charge of more thanR50000.00.

What I feel is ********* is that I was at no point kept appraised of the amount of data I was using. With data charges so high surely it would be appropriate and ethical to send an sms indicating when a certain quantity of out of bundle data has been used say 500mb or even 250mb – just as is done when a bundle is depleted? But then of course MTN wouldn’t have benefited to the same degree.

From a company that claims 'Integrity' as one of its values and that to them this means Do what is right, Be truthful to others and yourself Be trustworthy and reliable. I find the fact that they don’t keep people appraised of out of bundle usage is *********.

I of course contacted MTN and was told the issue had been sent to the accounts department but I received no feedback.

Good day Jonathan,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused as a result of this and assure you that it is not our intention to displease you.

Please note that an SMS is normally sent out only when you start using data at out of bundle rate. The SMS will read :" Yello! You have started incurring costs from the out of bundle rate ... ". From here you will need to monitor your data usage or set a data limit on your device.

It is also advisable to in future, await an SMS confirming your data recharge before using any data services just to ensure that you will not incur any additional out of bundle charges.

Please note that to avoid incurring charges you will need to set a usage limit on your line/account that will allow you to have control of what we can bill you over and above your monthly provisioning, i.e. If you set your limit to R100.00, MTN will allow you to use data of up to R100.00 in out of bundle rate. You can set your limit by dialing *141*5# and then select option "1. Manage usage".

We sincerely hope that this is in order and hope that we are able to restore your faith in us.

Kind Regards,

Tshepo M
