Unable to open new contract

Terrible experience with trying to open a new contract with MTN Ballito. Got approval for a contract of R1827 but am now told that I have to pay an upfront payment of R8999 before I can open the contract. MTN won’t supply me with a letter or contract stipulating what this amount is for or what my monthly repayment will be on the contract once the down payment is made. The Manager at MTN Ballito, Dean Reddy, was also of no assistance. Now I’m wanting to take my business elsewhere.
