In November/December 2022, MTN couriered a package to our home. My wife signed for it without knowing what it was or why it was delivered. When she opened it, it was an MTN router. She immediately contacted MTN to query this, as she never opened or authorised a new contract .
MTN then informed her that the router was linked to a new contract supposedly opened in her name , which was clearly *****ulent .
The router was never used at any point and remained in its original packaging from the day it was delivered.
When she tried to return the router, MTN refused to accept it because a piece of cardboard was missing from the packaging . Despite this, we opened multiple ***** cases , submitted emails, and even completed a police affidavit , all in an attempt to stop the *****ulent contract and debit orders — with no success.
In December 2023, after months of trying, a MTN store manager finally agreed to help and accepted the router back at the Menlyn Maine store . We later found out that MTN should have issued an IRMS number on return , which was never provided to us.
Despite the router being returned and the ***** being reported repeatedly, MTN continued debiting our bank account every month for over two years .
Eventually, we went to MTN Head Office, where a consultant took all our documentation (emails, ***** case numbers, and police affidavit) and promised assistance. MTN also stated that they would provide the call recordings of the contract being taken out — which they never did .
Instead, we later received the following response from MTN:
Following a review of our internal system, MTN claims my wife was advised within the cooling-off period to return the package. However, because it was only returned in December 2023, they refuse to cancel the contract.
They also state that we failed to provide an IRMS number — despite the fact that MTN never issued one when the router was returned.
MTN has now stated that we must contact the Cancellation Team, even though this was a *****ulent contract from the start .
To make matters worse, Saya Recoveries , a debt collection agency, is now contacting us for an alleged outstanding amount of R3,572.13 , even though we have already paid for over two years on a contract that should never have existed.
MTN has failed at every level :
* Allowed a *****ulent contract to be opened
* Refused an early return over packaging
* Ignored multiple ***** cases and affidavits
* Failed to provide contract recordings
* Continued debit orders for two years
* Handed the account to debt collectors unfairly
This has caused severe stress, wasted time, and financial loss. We are still seeking a full cancellation, reversal of all *****ulent charges, and written confirmation that this account will not affect our credit record
