They refuse to cancel contracts by simply ignoring requests

I initially called to have my contract switched to prepaid, on which I was informed that I needed to send an email. I sent an email and did not receive feedback until I followed up. With the follow-up, I was informed to go to a branch, at the branch again I was informed that I should send an email. I have escalated to their complaints department, with still no feedback - it's been 2 months. I have also been due for an upgrade for over a year now, so it is not a fact that the contract has not "expired" as yet. My package was reduced (i.e. I receive less data, minutes and SMS than what I originally signed for), but I still pay the same rate as initially. But still they can send SMS' and mails to say that the price will increase.

Simple advise, don't take out a contract with MTN if you ever want to cancel the contract in future as they will just not respond to your requests and keep you hostage.
