Tactics to delay the cancellation of a contract?

I phone MTN in order to ensure that my 24-month contract, ending 31 days from now, is terminated. I'm told I've phoned too early in the month, I must phone later. (Really????) I say, not acceptable, I am instructing you NOW, the answer is "Okay, I will put you through to our retentions department", upon which I can hear that I am transferred to another line. Immediately I hear "This call centre is closed at this hour" and my call is cut dead. At 15h21 in the afternoon???????

So in order to terminate my contract I must now make more phone calls? Are they hoping that I will get busy with something else, thus delaying my cancellation?

Why the retentions department? I am not interested in being retained. What part of "I want to terminate my contract " do they not understand??

I am disgusted. If I had any thought of staying with MTN, I have now been firmly encouraged not to continue with MTN. (And I have just read about their massive rate hike for prepaid calls, which apparently happened in June.)
