Stuck overseas ...no data roaming

I have been a client of MTN for 19 years. I visited a MTN shop before leaving for overseas. and I asked if international roaming will work. They indicated all is on order. Now I'm stuck overseas without data roaming. Can make calls and SMS and that it . No data roaming is possible without bringing the phone back to SA according which is not possible in times .
