Sony Xperia M5 guarantee

I bought a Sony Xperia M5 at the end of October 2016 which was a month old at the time from Gumtree. The owner gave me the box all accessories and the receipt for warranty purposes. After using the phone for a month the phone started switching off automatically. This is apparently a factory fault and the battery needs to be replaced under full warranty. I then contacted Sony immediately have confirmed the factory fault issue and notified me that seeing I am situated in Cape Town and that the warranty should be honored by the Service provider (MTN) I can go to them and it can be repaired or replaced the same day. I then contacted MTN and went to their repair center which is in Montague Gardens with the phone, original packaging + accessories and the receipt. The agent refused to help me as I was not the original owner of the phone and refused to repair or replace the unit under warranty. The fact that I am not original owner should not matter as this phone was still in within the first 3months of purchase and I also I have the purchase invoice as proof for the warranty. Defective mobile devices should be repaired or replaced while it is under warranty especially if it is a factory fault, the current owner status should not affect this as long as there is proof like an invoice or warranty slip. I have purchased a phone which was sold by MTN which is defective and they refuse to honor the warranty. This is clearly ********* business by one of the biggest mobile network giants. This is how they conduct business and I would not advise anyone to do business with them as they do not honor their obligations. I am one highly unsatisfied customer and horrified with way I was treated by so called professionals
