Sony M2 Aqua- water

On 11 November 2014 I upgraded my existing contract with MTN to the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua on a topup 100 contract.
On the 22 August 2015 (note that this was 9 months later) I went for a walk leaving my phone in my closet at home , when I got back my phone was off, extremely hot and wouldn't turn on.
this was terribly inconvenient as I live alone and am dependent on my cell phone for contact with the outside world emergencies. I was now left terribly vulnerable for the rest of the weekend, a woman alone in my crime ridden neighbourhood.
On Monday, I took the phone MTN in Cavendish. I was told that the warranty expired after 6 month and that I would have to pay a fee of R330.00 for an assessment, in desperation because I am reliant on my phone for security, I agreed.
On reading my contract, I discovered that my warranty was actually valid for 1 year, with a limited warranty for a further 12 months.
On the 31 August I got an sms saying that the phone was beyond repair due to water damage.
This is impossible, my cellphone had never been exposed to any liquid. It is even more disturbing that the technician would report water damage
